Appointment at the Associate Professor level may be considered for exceptionall well-qualified indivudals. An earned doctorate in mechanical engineering or closely related discipline is required. Applicants should have a strong interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching and in conducting sponsored research. The successful candidate will join the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. The ERC will facilitate a radical transformation of fluid power, significantly reducing energy consumption and spawnig whole new industries. The ERC uses multidisciplinary teams and industrial collaboration to solve complex problems. Candidates with industrial experience are strongly encouraged to apply. Research areas of the ERC include mechanical design, controls, materials, manufacturing, fluid mechanics, I.C., engines and technologies for efficient energy storage, transmission and conversion. Application areas of ERC research include existing uses of fluid power such as manufacturing and heavy equipment and new uses such as hydraulic hybrid vehicles, un-tethered medical devices, wearable high-powered tools and mobile robots.

Applicants for this position must go to the University of Minnesota's employment page to provide basic personal information. This position is posted as both a regular faculty tenure-track, and a regular faculty tenured position. You may apply for one or both titles if you meet the qualifications, however you must create an application for each position title for whihch you want to be considered. Our search process requires the following: 1) letter of application; 2) statement of teaching goals, 3) statemetn of research goals including how the candidate's research supports the ERC, 4) curriculum vitae; 5) names of references and 6) arranging for three letters of recommendation to be sent. Please submit all materials to:

Purdue University

Faculty Opportunity ,
College of Engineering, Fluid Power Systems, Purdue University

The Purdue University strategic plan calls for expanded participatoin in Discover, Learning, and Engagement. To achieve this goal the U niversity is in the process of hiring over 300 new faculty members and is emphasizing interdisciplinary research, in part through establishment of the $100M Discovery Park (http:www.purdue.edu/dp).

The College of Engineering strategic plan calls for increasing the size of th engineering faculty from 289 members (as of 2001) to 395 (by 2009). These faculty will have academic homes in one or more of the Schools in the College, and most will be affiliated with nine signatures areas (https://engineering.purdue.edu/Engr/Research/SignatureAreas).  The signature areas contain facilyt working in all ten Centers in Discovery Park Centers.

Ideal candidates should have expertise in one or more fields specified below and should be interested in their application to fluid power systems:

  1. Analysis, modeling and simulation of multi-domain systems;
  2. Modeling and control of hydraulicaly driven flexible robots
  3. Distributed sensing, controls, acoustics and diagnostics for complex fluid power systems;
  4. Functional fluids, ER fluids, and/or tribological systems;
  5. Design and motion control of water hydraulic systems;
  6. Simulation of large-scale systems and human-machine systems;
  7. Modeling, design and control of wearable power assist devices and/or portable robots;
  8. Modeling, design and control of pneumatic systems;
  9. Modeling and control of micro fluid power systems;

Applicants should have a few years of inustry experience or demonstrated research funding from industry and government agencies. The ERC is affiliated with the Energy Center of Purdue's Discover Park. Candidates with multi-disciplinary research focus are particularly encouraged.

Faculty candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree, have a distinguished academic record, exceptional potential for world-class research, and a committment to both undergraduate and graduate education. For consideration, please complete the online form at: https://engineering.purdue.edu/Engr/AboutUs/Employment/Applications and submit in electronic form your curriculum vitae, statement of research and teaching interests, and the names and contact information for at least three references. If you have difficulty submitting your application to this website, please contact Ms. Marion Ragland. Review of applications with begin October 1, 2006 and continue until filled.
